The maker

Art you can watch come to life

I am Chandler Allan, a pyrography artist based in Atlanta. You will find me burning pieces live at festivals and shows across the country, and making lanterns, pins and wall art in the studio between trips.

Every piece is designed, burned and finished by hand.

How it is made

From raw wood to finished piece

  1. Wood-burned geometric spiral on a live-edge slab

    Choose the wood

Each piece starts with a board or live-edge slab picked for its grain.

  2. Burning a piece at sunset at the Gorge

    Draw the design

Patterns are sketched freehand, often live in front of a crowd.

  3. Burning an isometric design by lamplight

    Burn every line

A heated pen traces and shades the design, one line at a time.

  4. Live-edge slab with a burned tree and cube pattern

    Seal and finish

A protective finish brings out the burn and keeps it rich for years.
